Scale is an indication of relative sizes. A 1:18 scale diecast car is one 18th the size of the real car. Written another way, the real car is 18 times larger. Likewise, a 1:43 scale diecast car means the real one is 43 times larger.
Look at the number after the "1". The larger the number, the smaller the vehicle is. For example, a 1:43 scale car is smaller than a 1:18 scale car.
The detailing on a model car will differ by scale. In general, larger cars will be more detailed, look more accurate, and have more features. For example, many 1:18 scale cars have workable steering and some have spring suspension for the tires. Features and level of detailing will also vary by manufacturer.
The actual size of diecast model cars will vary as they are proportionate to the actual car they are based on, but as a guide:
- 1:43 Scale - measures approximately 4 inches (10cm) in length
- 1:24 Scale - measures approximately 7 inches (15cm) in length
- 1:18 Scale - measures approximately 10 inches (25cm) in length
- 1:12 Scale - measures approximately 15 inches (40cm) in length
