Product Description

Limited edition print of Mike Hawthorn in the 'D' type Jaguar followed by The Mercedes of Fangio

Le Mans 1955

Le Mans 1955 – Celebrating Mike Hawthorn’s victory in the D-Type Jaguar at the famous 1955 Le Mans 24 Hour race that will be remembered as much for the terrible accident involving Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes as Jaguar’s success.

Behind Mike Hawthorn’s Jaguar can be seen the Mercedes No19 of Fangio.
Jaguar won The Le Mans 24 hour endurance race three times, in 1955, ‘56 and ‘57. In 1957, when the car was retired from racing, all of the top 5 positions were filled with Jaguar D-Types.

Mike Hawthorn was a tremendous character. His signature Bowtie was worn so that his tie wouldn’t flap loosely during the races, hence his nickname, Papillion (Butterfly) by the French. In the UK he was known as ‘The Farnham Flyer’. His life ended tragically at 29 whilst driving his Mk1 Jaguar, not on the track but in a road accident on the A3 Guildford Bypass.

This print celebrates the Glory Days of Jaguar and the incredible drivers that made it possible.
